  • Hello Lily! I want to thank you for your contributions to the wiki; they have been wonderful! I do have something to ask of you, however. As you know, Cress will be coming out on February 4, so I want to put a countdown timer on the Main Page. You wouldn't happen to know how to do that, would you? If you could, that'd be great! If not, then that's all right.

    • Hi Gabby,

The countdown timer is a great idea. I've added one below the poll, it's a widget from a website (Time and Date), which I don't really like, but I can't find a better one at the moment.

    • Thank you, Lily! Regardless of its appearance, I really like that we have a countdown now. Once again, thank you so much!

Btw, sorry if I seem really creepy, I promise I'm not, just lol, was hoping to talk to another fan haha :)

    • I finished it yesterday... I cannot wait for Winter (book) to know how this plan of Cinder that she mentioned to Kai at the whole end of Cress (book) will work out... but we have to wait a year.. :(

My favorite couple is Scarlet and Wolf, especially in Scarlet (book), but there wasn't much about them in Cress (book). My second favorite couple is Kai and Cinder. Cress and Thorne are okay, but I guess Thorne and Iko actually match more haha.

    • I know, it is horrible :'(

Haha, they are my favorite too!! I feel like Marissa totally cheated us though. The only chapter the both of them were in that was all Scarlet-and-Wolf-y was in the first five, like she gave it to us only to keep our hopes up that Scarlet and Wolf would be all lovey-dovey in that one too -__- Then after that is like "lol no, sorry, the get split up *laughing at you*". My second favorite couple is probably Cress and Thorne. Cress herself is kind of meh, but I love Thorne haha XD Cinder and Kai I don't really like all that much, they are just kind of boring imo lol. Although I did love their moment at the end haha.

  • Hi Lily!

I just wanted to reach out and say hi-- My name is Ariana, I'm on the Community Development team at Wikia. I'm also a Lunar Chronicles fan and was hoping to help out with a few things on the wiki.

Love the main page-- would you and Wynn22 be open to make some new headers? I could also add more video content and a new section, and maybe a welcome header on the top. Would you be open to any changes?

We also run a Tumblr and Twitter for YA books- so if you ever have anything to promote, let me know!

    • Hi Ariana, I'm sorry I didn't answer sooner, as I was a little busy myself and didn't have time for Wikia. Great to hear that you're also a Lunar Chronicles fan, the fanbase seem to be growing with the day :) It's very nice of you that you are willing to help out with the wiki, the structure and layout are far from finished and many information is also still missing. I'm open for any changes, so feel free to change whatever you feel like is the best.

    • Hi Ohmystars! JUST seeing your message now for some reason- so sorry I didn't get back to you earlier! The offer of course is still out there if you and Wynn22 are interested. No pressure either way! Let me know if the two of you are okay with it.

Also-- we are doing a The Maze Runner giveaway to admins on similar wikis. I'm just reaching out to admins who I thought might be interested! If you are, let me know and I can mail you a copy for free! We are doing The Maze Runner for book club next month too so we're spreading the word.

Anyway, so sorry it took me 2 months to get back to you! Hope you're having a great week. Asnow89 @@fandom (profile)•(talk) 22:21, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

    • Hi Ariana!! No problem for your delayed reply! I fully understand that as a staff member you must be very busy with the many Wikia promotional activities and also keeping an eye on all the wikis. Absolutely amazing to hear that Wikia is doing books giveaway to admins on similar wikis, that surely will help boost the motivation of admins to work harder on the wikis! I'm a book lover myself and I am currently catching up on the dystopian and post-apocalyptic YA books. The Maze Runner happens to be on my upcoming reading list. I was planning on buying the book, but this giveaway just comes at a perfect timing! How can I tell you my mailing address? Looking forward to the book! :)

    • Awesome, I'm so glad it interests you! (I also just read the book a few weeks back- and I finished it in one night. It's a really fun read). I'm going to send you an email now so you can send me your mailing address!

  • Hey Lily!

Earlier today Asnow89 told me that all wikis are going to be incorporating "parent pages,"  guides for parents about the content of books and movies. Here's what she sent me:

"Here is a Parent Page example from The Hunger Games Wiki to give you an idea of what the page entails. Essentially, it's a guide for parents about the age range for different wikis.

Let me know if you have any questions! We are planning to start setting up the pages over the next week or so. Thanks so much!"

So now, we have to create a parent page for the Lunar Chronicles Wiki. I know The Hunger Games Wiki used the film as an example, but we could change a few things here and there since The Lunar Chronicles doesn't have a movie.

    • Hi Gaby,

Thanks for informing me! I've filled in the parent page here a bit. Not sure about everything! Especially the "violence" field, should we give a description of the nature of the violence scenes?

    • I don't think we really need to expand on the "Violence" category other than "Moderate violence," but we could give a brief description.

    • I tried to write a brief description, but now it sounds worse than it actually is?

    • I tweaked it a little, but otherwise it sounds good. It's short and simple, and I think a parent could determine whether or not they want their kid reading the series.

  • Dang, I realized my action may royally piss off admins, but in my defense, the home page was unlocked so I took it upon myself. Like I stated in the edit summery, the gap between the left column and the footers was pretty big. THEN I noticed some words of the countdown were actually cutoff for some reason, and I feel like the waiting is always something to look forward to, so I moved it to the top of the main column. I don't know much about coding so I failed to make the words centered with the usual codes, or let the book image place slightly to the middle instead of outrightly on the left.

I just feel like reporting the changes, and want to let you know that I totally understand and respect the decision if the changes I made are undone. This wiki actually make me give a chance to the series, I've just got my hands on the audiobooks (more of a listener than a reader), will start them soon and see if I do indeed like the series.

      Loading editor
    • Hey!

Don't worry about it. The changes are completely fine! Thank you for contributing. :)

Great to hear you will start the series soon. Hopefully you will enjoy the books as much as I did. I would recommend you to start with Cinder first, and not Fairest (despite being a prequel), so that the twists are revealed in the order intended by the author.

        Loading editor
    • Thank you for the suggestion! I did think about asking the exact same thing, but as I somehow couldn't find the audiobook for Fairest, I'd have to start with Cinder anyway lol. The discovery of this wiki actually altered my decision of whether or not I should bring my laptop with me - I'm going to attend WonderCon tomorrow, but I don't exactly live near the location; so going with the cheapest way, I'll have to travel ALL NIGHT on a bus... I was planning to just sleep during the trip (since I didn't think a laptop is necessary for the event next day), but now, I think I'll bring it so I can listen to the audiobooks like some bedtime stories ahaha! Hopefully it all works out. A bit anxious of having a laptop at night on a bus, but perhaps it's worth it. =]

  • I'm like 7/10 done with Cinder, I'm not head over heals with it YET, but I def. see potential and will continue listening (ha! audiobooks) to the series.

Anyhows, a little updates on my actions again (I tried my best to word it in the edit summary, but there's just not enough words lol) (I know I may sound obnoxious, trying to "justify" what I did when I probably don't have to, but I do always feel guilty when editing main page... I feel like that's a page that is super sacred, representing the wiki and all, so yeah, this is just to ease my conscience... Bear with me!)

The reason I feel it was important to "match" the left and right styles, is cuz it gives a sense of consistency; it felt a bit weird to me that the headings of the right were centered, while on the left were aligned left. Top of that, some content on the left "seemingly" already looked centered, so I thought might as well make it all as cohesive as possible. The books and characters column may look too narrow now, but I found out that when adding width="100%", although they lovingly spread out, they were NOT spread out centeredly (you can check previous versions) and were very close to the left, leaving a bigger gap on the right. I couldn't fix this alignment problem with width="100%" intact, but once I removed it the problem was gone.

I added the Novellas section cuz previously "Carswell's Guide to Being Lucky" and "(2014)" was split into two lines... It just wasn't visually as pleasing as it could be.

Lastly, the most important thing I failed to do, is that last time, I mentioned the reason I relocated the countdown section was because the content was cutoff; I super belatedly realized EVERYTHING ON THE RIGHT COLUMN IS CUTOFF! Is no one having this problem other than myself!? The author picture, the quote, the video... just seriously everything. It looked like the right column was set to a width that went max 100% therefore leaving stuff out that couldn't be fit in, but I checked and I could find nothing wrong with the codes (then again, I barely understand codes) so idk, might want to ask someone whose area of expertise is indeed coding to check what went wrong... it's a bit frustrating to not be able to read whole sentences and seeing a picture that's chopped off.

    • So above is what I did just now (like 2-3 hrs ago), now here's the suggestion part, one you can obviously ignore because... yeah it's just an outsider's suggestion lol =P

It's about the forum; it got my attention because, like I said, I'm almost done with Cinder, and I have tons of thoughts I wanted to share and discuss (see it as a reader's review of sorts), then I found out there's only the "General Discussion" that is intended for the series, the rest are all for the wiki itself. I hope this can be changed to help filter out the content of threads; creating at least two new boards: Book Discussion and Character Discussion; Book Discussion then can have 5 (later 6) threads officially posted by admins, encouraging that each thread (Fairest, Cinder, Scarlet, Cress and Novellas (a thread for Winter can be added once the book is actually published)) is the place to share thoughts about the specific piece(s). This is a board that I really think is needed, please consider! =D

Character Discussion... This one has a whole different reason behind it and I'll understand if the board is not made. It's just that the "comments" on character pages are reaching to a really high number (comparing to other regular pages), and some really feel like they are discussion material, while some others voice questions about the content of the page (can benefit page quality). I personally feel that the character appreciation type of comments can be moved to forum and idk... have a thread about how much people love a certain character or something; because the forum already exists, it feels a bit redundant to have two things functioning so similarly. Whereas talk pages, people can talk about concerns on the page content to raise the page accuracy. This is just me, and I know it can still be done in comment format, but mixing with comments of admiration just made it a bit harder to find.

Other boards like Fan Theory could be nice, moving all speculation type threads from General Discussion to this board can be more straightforward that every thread on the board is deduction (before the topic of which is revealed in canon)

but yeah, my main issue really is there's no Book Discussion and only general, I feel that somethings should be single out to discuss specifically and not just general. The other two stuff I mentioned is just after thoughts.

Hopefully I'm not offending you too much by now. I'm not trying to be difficult, just trying to push every function this wiki access into its fullest use. Happy belated easter (dunno if you celebrate it but owells)!

        Loading editor
    • Wow, long messages! :) I'm sorry I didn't reply earlier, but I forgot to check this wiki.

Thank you for the changes in the main page and don't worry about any "sacredness" of it. We didn't leave open the edit function for nothing! It's meant for people like you to help us out if you see fit. And you're right, the right column is cut off. It wasn't like that at first, but started after I made an edit somewhere last month. I know about it, but never bothered to fix it, will take a look at it later.

As for the forums, I only created the General Discussion board back then, because at the time (of creation) there wasn't much discussion taking place. So my plan was to wait and see if there would be need later to divide the boards once the discussions roll. But until now, it is still pretty quiet there :( Based on your suggestion, I created a "book discussion" and "fan theories discussion" board and moved some of the topic to the new boards. Sadly, we are not able to move comments on article pages to the forums, so I didn't create a Character board. At least not yet, it is something we will consider if the need arises. I also merged the two wiki-related discussion boards (help desk and community board).

As for the books themselves, you are going through them pretty fast!!! :) I liked the book Cinder, but Scarlet is my favorite of the series. So even if you're not head over heels over Cinder, you might like Scarlet. New characters are introduced in that one, but the story continues. So hope you don't give up on the series just yet!!

Happy belated easter to you too!!

    • Oh, no need for sorries! Your reply is definitely the one and only efficient respond I ever received based on previous experiences when writing to wikia admins (sad but true). You are my favorite as of now, haha, I hope you know you are very, very appreciated!

Okay phew, good to know, cuz I was really starting to think that maybe my Safari was the one having problems and not the layout.

Thank you for creating the board! (See, you really are the best there is!) I want to ask for your permission though, is it okay for me to create a thread called "Book review: Cinder" and THEN post my thoughts about the book as a reply? I don't want to be seen as spamming or bumping up for forum participation (I'm not even sure if this can achieve anything), but because my thoughts are obviously mine, therefore, subjective, I don't want people coming in and just discuss/debate about what I think about the book (will be placed as thread topic if I don't share it as a reply); I hope to at least have the first post being objective to encourage everybody's participation, and not just to show agreement/disagreement of what is said. Of course, hopefully through disagreements I'll still be able to hear what other people think, which I'm dying to know, but I'd just preferred the act being done, not cuz provoked by what I say, but because motivated by "wanting to share their thoughts". OKAY, I KNOW I SUCK AT EXPLAINING, but I hope it makes some sense. This is why I previously wrote "5 (later 6) threads officially posted by admins"; to me it has a sense of unity if all done in the same format, giving it an "official" type of feeling, despite this is all fan contribution.

Gah, I really am rubbish at explaining. Anyhow, no, it doesn't absolutely require to be done by admins, and I don't mind doing it myself (or I wouldn't have asked), but I just want to make sure it is okay with you, as the thread topic will be super short and simple, containing spoiler warning and basic advices on respecting other people's opinion etc (all the stuff to me that feel like what an admin would say to members, rather than a member to other members, so I don't want to overstep the boundaries). The thing is, once the thread is created, I might not even be to first one to reply, cuz like I said, I really do have tons of stuff to say, positive AND negative, I don't think I can whip up a review even if I'm given an hour or two. If it is okay to post the new thread, I'm also telling you beforehand, I don't want you/everyone else to think "well? you created the thread, where's the reply you said you're going to share?"; I'm a super slow writer, I think posting to you sometimes takes hours for the content I write lol, so I can imagine it takes longer to finish a critical and readable book review. I think about the worst-case-scenerio, so I'm sure what I just talked about probably seems super hella defensive out of nowhere, but I'd really hate to be mistaken as someone who regularly starts something and doesn't bother to finish it; I would be lying if I say I've never done so in my life, but in this situation it really isn't the case and that I just need time to actually write down my thoughts.

I have two-ish other new questions I will write as a new message after posting this one; because this one is getting a bit long and they aren't directly related, I think I just need a yes or no from you then I'm good to go, most likely won't be replying your next respond on this thread.

        Loading editor
    • Aww.. did you really have bad experiences with other admins? :(

No need to ask me for permission for anything! :) Just do what you think is best and if it turns out that it was not such a good idea, we could always revert edits or even delete. Posting reviews or other subjective opinion is good for encouraging discussion, so no need to worry about provocating anyone. These wikis are not only for praises and compliments only!

As for giving threads an "official" feel, I could create an "official" thread if you want me to. But if you feel like helping out with this wiki, we could always make you a moderator? Then your posts in the forum would be pretty "official".

  • There are two things I saw on this wiki and would like to know if they came from reliable sources, if so, where:

I mean, I totally buy it! Especially when Sailor Moon was a constant thing during my childhood (kindergarten up to 3rd grade, I believe); when I read the part about being a fanfic, I was like, dude, this makes sense, I get it! Cuz originally the series did talk about residence on the moon, being the princess there, such and such, until the anime completely shifted focus and turned it into... well... still girls fighting in sailor uniforms, but fighting against something else. So yeah, I'm just curious as to if those two statements are accurate, if so, they really lack citation, which is why I thought about the possibility of being fan observation and deduction... Idk, I think proper crediting sources is really crucial, like:

I think it's a really nice trivia (assuming it's true); but again, no source! If it's from an interview, link it; from a tweet, link it; from the author's note in the book (I don't physically own the book so I don't know if there's such section), state it, etc... Those may not be edited by you, but I felt that seeing three cases without citation, it seems like I should take it to the admins and idk, so that you guys can re/educate the contributors on the wiki, emphasizing the importance of reference.

So that's that. The other thing is just out of my curiosity, and because there's so little outside this wiki about the series (or I just failed at googling), I feel like simply asking the people who are really into the books is probably the fasted way to get answers, since you guys might know where to look for official news. (checked the tumblr/official site... I have to say, tumblr always confuses me so it is possible that there's something there and I just missed it) but yeah, is it ever stated how many books this series is outlined to have? Or do people just wait and see if the next book is the last when they get to read it? I really don't read much, well, literature-wise anyways, so I never have to wonder about how long a series will last. Since this one is still ongoing, I'm just wondering if the author ever expressed her general plan or something.

What prompted me to ask this question is, well, the reason I came across this series in the first place, was because I have a thing for adaptations of fairy tales, especially of the princesses (okay, please don't creep out, I'm not on the level of having a fetish for it.), so I was just wondering if there's a possibility that a character based on Belle (Beauty and the Beast) (whose Disney adaptation, before the introduction of Rapunzel and Tiana, was my all-time favorite, still kinda is, actually), to be newly introduced later on into this universe. And that was when I realized I don't know if it's already confirmed, say, only 6 books in total, or some number that's also smaller than 10... cuz really, if that's the case, there's probably no room for new characters.

Why I thought Belle's story can be spun upon and somehow tie-in to this world... is mainly cuz of Beast lol. I'm starting Scarlet tonight (which is soon), I don't have all the facts, and what's said on this wiki actually leave me doubt my original impression, but yeah, in Cinder I somehow thought it was hinted that the Lunar Special Operative consists of werewolf-ish type of being... I figure "Wolf" would have been the perfect, albeit cliche candidate to make it work... but on the wiki it says he's Human (and I also realized it wasn't stated this character is base on "the big bad wolf", I just assumed he was since he's associated with Scarlet), I'll have to get into the book to see how much of it was my misconception, since I'm having trouble finding a page for the werewolf-ish beings here. I thought they were a species or at least sub-species, but I don't know the official name (not mentioned in Cinder) so I don't know what I'm searching for right now. Anyways, if those being do actually exist (not just the fig of my imagination cuz I was listening to the audiobook as bedtime story), I think Beast can lamely (whatever!) fit in! Haha... My wish anyways.

I came across this on the HP wiki: http://www.wikia.com/Alliance

Do you think this wiki can apply? I think it qualifies for both Fantasy and Sci-fi. I don't really know what this thing is, but it says members can receive promotions of their wiki, which sounds nice, so I thought I should share it. =]

    • Yeah, that is kind of what I gathered as well; I just remember when I watched the super horrible film (lmao), besides the cute christmas tree tattoo, my thoughts was that "there's got to be more about that witch"; cuz it really doesn't make any sense to me if there wasn't, like there's just randomly this witch for the story to happen. So I'm glad the author (if this was her idea) decided to go for that route. But man, the reviews I'm seeing is sooooooo on opposite ends, either people think it's the best thing in the world, or they think it's complete crap. I mean, there's also people that thought it was just okay, but then it really doesn't help determining whether the book is generally considered good or not lol.

This question asked about Towering and Cloaked: https://www.goodreads.com/questions/257306 although I probably shouldn't take the answer as absolute truth, but there's the possibility that there is in fact little small easter eggs to reveal they are connected besides being fairy tale retellings xP.

        Loading editor
    • Well, back then I thought that Beastly was pretty good, and the movie horribly bad. When I look back to it, especially now I've read more books and have more material to compare it to, I'd say the book wasn't that special, but still not bad. You can give it a try and see for yourself.

Hmm.. based on that answer, I guess Towering and Cloaked are connected by some minor characters or events? From the description it doesn't look like Kendra is in those books.

  • Gawd I'm so sorry, I didn't plan to bother you three times in a row, but I literally just noticed this. I know you said everything is open for edit, but I'm taking this to you because I looked up the history and saw you were the one that made most (if not all) this type of changes...

I don't know what the exact reason of the action is, but here's my thought, when a character has been established and introduced with a full name, use it as the page name for that character. It literally makes little sense when Cinder itself can represent the book, while Linh Cinder represent the character... Why making them Cinder (book) and Cinder (character) when the other title is distinguishable already? I learn this from other wikis, if there really is a possibility of causing confusion, simply fixing it like this:

    • (add to the top of the page for the book)
This article is about the first book of the The Lunar Chronicles. For the character that shares the same given name, see Linh Cinder.

    • (add to the top of the page for the character)
This article is about the Lunar-turned-Cyborg character. For the book, see Cinder.

I see this dire enough to be brought up to you, because I horrifyingly found out all the other characters are dealt with the same way... I belated picked up on this because, in most articles, like in infoboxes, the links still present characters with full names, I just click on them and never realized I was directed to pages of which titles were changed.

If there's a character with no full name, just A name, and happens to have a book of the same name, then I can understand why the articles needed to be labeled as [the name] (book) and [the name] (character); however, this is totally not the case! It just really seems like a redundant move when canon does provide separations for both.

For Cinder, I don't know if this was the reason that prompted all the changes, but I think in this case, this was a mistake, although meant for good intention, that sadly missed the mark by a contributor. I thought ALWAYS RESPECT CANON is a given. It has nothing to do with tradition; if it's introduced in canon in such way, then state it using such way. This is actually one of the major negatives I have about Cinder, and apparently some contributor (this is not bashing, but really from what was written for the edit summary, it really looked like s/he thought s/he knew something about Asian culture, but really didn't fully grasp it) acted on it. Confusion or not, in canon, WRITTEN IN ENGLISH, no less, the character is introduced as Linh Cinder; it should just be that and nothing else, no alteration to "cater to" western audience's brain capacity. I almost think that statement of the summary is insulting both western and nonwestern; why should anything be changed just cuz certain people aren't used to it? The world isn't centered around anyone, and the whole argument is laughable because like I said, this series is written by a western author who wrote it that way. I don't believe all western audience are naive enough to not understand there's something called cultural differences. So seriously, if this is the reason, then it really isn't worth it. If really worried about said confusion, treat it like how it is on general wikipedia:

    • (add to the top of the page for the character Cinder)
This is a name using Eastern order; the family name is Linh.

This should efficiently explain, if someone still has trouble, then it just can't be helped. I avoid saying "Chinese name" because I find it sketchy at most (part of the negatives I mentioned). When I listened via the audiobook, I did think it was aiming to mimic Chinese, for "Lin" is a super common family name, and factoring being set in a place called New Beijing, it is very easy to come to this conclusion; then I looked it up closely and found out it was spelt as Linh. Unless someone tried to be super different (like a stage name), there's no way that's a Chinese family name. I looked it up to reconfirm and the top search results are actually all Vietnamese, with half of them aren't even as family name but given name. So I think writing it as Eastern order is the safest bet, as it never was (as of now) stated what the family's exact ancestry is.

Again I know you told me everyone is free to edit, but because this specific type of edit was done by you, I think I should just present my case to you first before making a move. (and there's the fact that I'm completely rubbish at redirecting, I just don't understand how it works; adding the explanation stuff to the top of the articles, that I can do, but the redirecting, I don't think I know how to change it)

To me, it really looks horrible when clicking into a page that has the big bold letters on top as [the name] (character), only to have the canon given full name written right underneath it; it really only makes my wonder why th not just use that? So yeah... I understand you guys don't make any decisions lightly, so it was most certainly changed for a good reason; but since I don't know what that reason is, I hope I covered some of the ways to work around the possible concerns, so that it can be changed back if those were the reasons.

    • Alright. I'm sorry I talk very gibberish (English isn't my native language), but yes that was exactly my point. We didn't use the full names of Adri and co. to keep consistent with everything that spoil. We could have a different standards for those that spoil and those that doesn't, but that would be a bit messy, don't you think?

    • Oh no, no sorries! You were being pretty clear, I just didn't know the big picture so I associated some sentences to something it wasn't directing to; it's just a misunderstanding.

English isn't your native language? Dang I could not tell! You seem very fluent (written word wise)! Do you read the series in English or in your native language? (just curious xP)

Yeah I figured as much, it's fine to keep it simple I suppose. =]
